Has 50 years of progress affected distortions at the edge of the frame? The answer we need to give is negative. Nikkor-S 5.8 f/1.4 show not large, but noticeable barrel distortion, whose level was measured to be -1.89%. The new Nikkor AF-S 50 mm f/1.4G recorded a practically identical result. In its case the recorded value amounted to -2.01%. Taking into account the measuring errors, which in this case are around 0.1%, from a statistical point of view both the results are equal. As a matter of fact, looking at the pictures below, we can see that they’re equal from a practical point of view also.
