Tokina AT-X PRO FX SD 17-35 mm f/4 (IF)

1. Introduction

When it comes to full frame, wide angle zoom lenses, starting with 16-17 mm and finishing with 35-40 mm, brand name producers have always been leading the way. For example in the line-up of Canon you can find such models as the EF 17–40 mm f/4.0L USM and the EF 16–35 mm f/2.8L USM; Nikon has the older AF-S 17–35 mm f/2.8D ED-IF and much newer devices as well: the AF-S 16–35 mm f/4G ED VR and the AF-S 18–35 mm f/3.5–4.5G ED. Sony offers a very good and very expensive Zeiss lens – namely the Vario Sonnar 16–35 mm f/2.8 T* SSM.

I suppose the independent producers give up on that class of equipment a bit too easily. Several years ago Sigma withdrew the 17-35 mm f/2.8–4 EX DG HSM Aspherical model from the market and they haven’t launched its successor yet; Tamron offers just the quite elderly SP AF 17–35 mm f/2.8–4 Di LD Aspherical (IF). Tokina seems to be the only exception here – in 2010 they launched the AT-X PRO FX SD 16–28 mm f/2.8 (IF) and one year later they complemented their offer by the AT-X PRO FX SD 17–35 mm f/4 (IF) model.
