1. Introduction

You can’t complain about the lack of classic 50 mm f/1.4 lenses, available currently on the market. However, all of them seem to share the same problem: while their performance near the maximum relative aperture can rarely be considered decent, the edge of the frame is often weak, even dismal.

More or less at the same time (October 2013) two companies decided to present their new optical constructions, allegedly free of that flaw. I think here of the Zeiss Otus 55 mm f/1.4 ZE/ZF.2 and the Nikkor AF-S 58 mm f/1.4G. The constructors, not being limited by the price, were supposed to produce lenses whose excellent optical properties were their main priority. In this test we are going to check how Zeiss carried out their task – enjoy your lecture!
