Sigma A 35 mm f/1.4 DG DN – first impressions

1. Introduction

When it comes to top-of-the-range fixed-focal Art series lenses, Sigma has already presented the A 35 mm f/1.2 DG DN, the A 85 mm f/1.4 DG DN, and the A 105 mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro, all designed for full frame mirrorless cameras.

It seemed that the system lacked the most a classic 50 mm standard lens as fast as f/1.4 or even f/1.2. Still Sigma made a quite surprising move and launched the A 35 mm f/1.4 DG DN. This decision is truly astonishing because now they have three 35 mm devices in their line-up ( one model as fast as f/1.2, then a bit slower one, the Art f/1.4 lens, and the f/2.0 Contemporary series device) and they still lack a classic standard.

Perhaps the Sigma management decided a new 35 mm instrument is going to be more saleable than a standard lens. Its success is supposed to be fueled by its price, $899, two times lower than you have to pay for the rival Sony FE 35 mm f/1.4 GM, and around $100 lower than the price of the older Zeiss Distagon T FE 35 mm f/1.4 ZA.
