If a photographic system wants to be treated seriously by professionals it has to feature tools they demand. A classic 24-70 mm f/2.8 journalistic prime might be considered one of such indispensable tools.
When it comes to the full frame mirrorless Sony FE system such a lens was launched in 2016 – it was the Sony FE 24-70 mm f/2.8 GM, a huge 138 mm x 87.6 mm device that weighed as much as 886 grams.
Recently Sony Corporation have been drawing abundantly from the possibilities provided by contemporary optics and different types of glass available today. The times when Sony optics specialists had to get help from their coleagues from Zeiss are over; you can even say the pupil bested the teacher or at least got as good as them. As a result, the latest launches of Sony lenses have been very successful – the company has been offering very well-put-together instruments which are shapely and lightweight, often smaller and lighter than their rivals or predecessors.
The newest Sony launch, the Sony FE 24-70 mm f/2.8 GM II, fits that strategy perfectly well. The new lens is not only optically more complex than its predecessor, featuring two elements more and many special glass elements as well, but also it is physically lighter, shorter, and equipped with a newer, more efficient autofocus module based on XD motors.
