Cons: None really. Perhaps the bokeh could be nicer? Weather sealing would be nice too ... but it is not an 'L' lens.
Pros: Silent, rapid, accurate AF. Light weight. Fairly compact. Well made. Superb image quality. Excellent sharpness and resolution of detail right into the corners. Not a trace of chromatic aberration. If there is any distortion it is negligible.
Summary: Wonderful lens. The newer L version has IS and is said to have even better IQ. Looking at the results from my non-IS non-L version it is hard to see how anything this side of a Zeiss Otus would give noticeably better results.

Cons: no IS, AF hunting at normal distances for portraiture, bokeh
Pros: as good as the L version but 3 times cheaper! very sharp...
Summary: just get this one, a real bargain

Cons: A little long for crop-sensored cameras(more of a preference, than a disadvantage).
Pros: Very sharp wide open and even a little bit sharper stopped down a bit. Doubles as a portrait and macro-lens.
Summary: If you don't need the faster f/2 or the IS/weather-sealing of the 100mm L, there should be nothing keeping you from buying this lens. Highly recommended.

Cons: No lens hood like all Canon's other than "L" classification
Pros: Sharp, Sharp, Sharp! Cost to Value ratio is high
Summary: Currently my favorite lens. Before the new 100mm 2.8 L IS came out, this lens was all but considered and "L". It has an amazingly sharp set of optics, and producess bright-contrasty images with little to no post processing. I use this lens for nature, macro, and portrait imaging on my 50D. I would think twice before I considered the new "L" version over this model at nearly twice the cost.
