Sigma 50 mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM
1. Introduction
Classic in days of analog devices, the 50 mm lenses still are very popular, although the majority of people now own reflex cameras with APS-C/DX sensors. The problem is that most of the 1.4/50 class lenses are outdated. For example the Canon 1.4/50 USM appeared in 1993 and the respective Nikkor is only three years younger. The Sony reflex cameras owner are in the best situation because “their” 50 mm has been put on the market recently, although, in fact, it’s just a refreshed Minolta construction.
Small wonder, then, that the users of many systems counted on an updating of their favourite manufacturers’ offer in this category. More precisely, an optics designed to work with digital sensors and an ultrasonic autofocus motor were expected. The fastest reaction was from Pentax, as the company announced a new DA* 55 mm f/1.4 SDM model in January. The lens is still unavailable in shops, though, so Sigma beat everybody, which announced a full frame Sigma 50 mm/1.4 EX DG HSM lens on 18 march 2008 and in July that instrument appeared in Polish shops.
