Cons: Weight and price.
Pros: This is a great everyday lens. The image quality I get has improved with my experience and knowledge.
Summary: I enjoy just enjoy using this lens because it allows me to get wide angle and some close up pictures with one lens. It may not be the greatest lens in the Canon lineup, but it is a workhorse of a lens.

Cons: Not razor sharp at f/2.8; field curvature.
Pros: Great colors, contrast, build quality. AF speed and accuracy. Excellent sharpness when stopped down slightly (very sharp by f/3.2, razor sharp by f/4).
Summary: I understand that the sample variation of this lens is pretty great but if you get a good copy, it's absolutely fantastic. It's been my primary lens for 4 years (initially on a 40D and now on a 5D3) and I still love it.

Cons: could hope a bit sharper at 2.8, flare resistance, vignetting
Pros: great homogeneity, great AF
Summary: a used one is a real bargain

Cons: This lens sucks. It's extremely soft. Only when you get very close to a subject is it remotely sharp. I've sent this to canon to rebuild, calibrate, etc. and it's still terrible. It's not completely fair to compare this to a prime, but my 85mm 1.8 is MUCH sharper at f1.8 than this lens is at f2.8. It's also softer than an 18-55mm rebel kit lens. Another con is the backwards zoom, the barrel extends as you zoom OUT and retracts when you zoom in.
Pros: Good build quality. That's about it. And that it has a red ring, some of your friends might be impressed by that.
Summary: I do not recommend this lens. It seems that some users appear to be happy with their copies, but an equal amount are seeing the same issues that I am. I have use the NEW version II of this lens (from borrowlenses) and can tell you that it's absolutely amazing, and worth the extra price. Prime sharp at 2.8, at all focal lengths.

Cons: 1) Heavy - definitely noticeable on a 450D. 2) Field curvature might be an issue
Pros: Excellent image contrast and colors. The IQ is very good
Summary: This is my workhorse lens, which I use as a general purpose zoom. It takes excellent pictures, and I've been very happy with it. Although it's heavy, it works very well for my needs, anyway.

Cons: it is big and heavy but I'm not complaining one bit. It would be nice it is was a bit less expensivebut you do get that you pay for.
Pros: IMAGE QUALITY! fast AF accruate AF (to me that is just as important as the speed of the AF if not ever more important) Manual AF is nice and easy to use.
Summary: Honestly this is one very increadable lens in every aspect. Yes it is heavy, Yes it is big but those two problems pretty much just disappear when yopu are using the lens. it is a very ewasy lens to handle even for a long period of time. it remains sharp no matter the setting you are using and it is as sharp as pretty much any prime once you set to f-stop to 4.0 or over (seriously this lens is sharp) Also it has one very cool feature. the lens actually extends when you are at the widest setting. This makes the lens hood very useful as every zoom setting, not just the widest setting like most every other zoom lens. Also I know that many people find this lens expensive, but trust me that money is well spent in this lens. Note: i have been using this lens on two ASP-C cameras, a 40d and a 7d.
