The Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a middle-range priced lens with very promising parameters for photographers accustomed to the analog bodies. With its 24mm focal length the field of view reaches 84deg, thus making the lens great for landscape work, as well as a very good lens for interior pictures and could even pass admirably for journalism. At the 85mm focal length and a field of view of 28.5deg the lens is also well suited for portrait photography.

The popularity of this lens did not deteriorate when digital cameras were introduced. The Canon 10D had something to do with this since the camera did not accept lenses with an EF-S mounting. Those Canon 10D owners, who wanted to have a so-called “mobile zoom,” chose the EF 24-85mm lens, which worked with the 10D just like the 38-135mm did, thus providing 59 to 18deg field of view. It is worth adding that the new lens costs about 310$ but if you want to get a second-hand one, a very good one can be found for 200$.
