3. Build quality

Because the large focal length range is designed for a wide frame, the presence of a USM motor, stabilization and a metal bayonet result in the Canon 28-135 mm being rather sizable and heavy. The lens’s 97 mm size increases when we enlarge the focal length with a non-rotating front lens, additionally covered with a 72 mm diameter filter mounting.

The Canon’s heavy weight of 540 grams is probably influenced by its complicated construction. The construction contains 16 lenses set up in 12 groups.

It is a real pleasure to work with the lens especially with a body bigger than 350/400D. The large size provides a fine grip and the manual sharpness change and focal length adjustment rings are very comfortable and precise.

In summary, the Canon 28-135 mm is far away from the die-cast magnesium alloy L-grade lenses, but its build is of a very stable quality and will thus satisfy the needs of more or less advanced amateurs. Even professionals accustomed to working with something like a 1.4/50, will not a degraded performance.
