Cons: Limited zoom range, limited fastness, plastic mount, doesn't come with lens hood, difficult to use manual focus, lens thread turns when zooming and focusing

Pros: Usable image quality throughout the zoom range, good VR, good price/quality ratio

Summary: This was the kit lens that came with my D5000. Cheap materials but well built, this is a good starting point for a DSLR shooter. Throughout the zoom range and starting at max aperture, it gives pleasant results. But the zoom range is so limited that I'd rather recommend the 18-105VR Kit lens which has similar properties but a longer reach.

Cons: Slow AF, very small MF ring, no hood in a box, below average resolution, vignetting, plastic mount.

Pros: Good build quality, big zoom ring, VR, cheap.

Summary: Only for beginners. For other users Nikkor 17-70 f3.5-4.5, 16-85 f3.5-5.6 VR, 17-55 f2.8

    Cons: Could be better made

Pros: Capable of very good results

Summary: At this sort of price this is a remarkable piece of equipment. Despite its shortcomings, the simple truth is it will outperform many of the photographers that use it, and even with many years of experience behind me I include myself here.
