1. Introduction

The Sigma Art line has been developing with iron consequence; currently it includes fast, full frame, fixed-focal lenses with focal lengths ranging from 14 to 135 mm. As all classic models can be already found in that group we thought that the next step of Sigma would be filling gaps in the 135 – 500 mm range, especially that such producers as Canon or Nikon have already been offering 2/200, 2.8/200, 2.8/300, 4/300, 2.8/400, 4/400 or 5.6/400 lenses. It would certainly improve Sigma’s competitiveness. Still the company’s choice was different. In September 2018 they announced the launch of two new 1.4/28 and 1.4/40 models. As the 28 mm focal length might be considered classic and its presence in the line-up is more than understandable, the launch of the 40 mm lens was a huge surprise. After all two very well-done Sigma instruments, the 1.4/35 and the 1.4/50, are already available.

I admit the physical dimensions of the new Sigma and the latest achievements in the Art series made us very curious; they suggested the new lens might have outstanding optical properties. That’s why we agreed to test the new Sigma with real enthusiasm and the results you can find below.
