7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The degree of coma correction in the Argus 1.2/28 FF explains partially its weak performance on the edge of the frame. The traces of coma, in a shape of a slight elongation of points of light, are visible already in the corners of the APS-C/DX sensor; in the corner of full frame these 'commas' get additionally quite huge 'wings' and their presence stems from a bad correction of higher degrees aberrations.

Stopping down the lens to f/1.4 doesn't help at all and only after applying a relative aperture near f/2.0 you are able to reduce coma in a significant way.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values, amounted to 18%. It's a value that approaches high levels so it contributes significantly to weakening of image quality.

When it comes to out-of-focus areas it would be difficult to have any reservations to the results. Circles of light look nice; even onion-ring bokeh, a feature that might cause problems because of the presence of aspherical elements, is rather unconspicuous. Still there are other problems: in the corners of the frame you can notice that light spread in the circles becomes very uneven and also mechanical vignetting might bother you even by f/2.0.
