1. Introduction

The Tokina company from Japan seems to specialize in producing wide angle devices. In the last few years they have presented two versions of the 11-16 mm f/2.8 and the 12-24 mm f/4.0 lenses. The former is a truly unique device because no company has produced an ultra wide-angle f/2.8 instrument, designed for APS-C sensors so far. The latter, with the focal range of 12-24 mm, didn’t stick out so much because those parameters can be found among the products of other companies. Tokina decided to go further in that direction and in January 2013 they showed a model with even a wider range of focal lengths, that of 12-28 mm.

Recently the competitors of Tokina also have launched 10-24 mm lenses so the company decided to go toward longer focal lengths. It was a good decision for two reasons. Firstly, the customers are offered a bigger choice. Secondly, the 28 mm focal length on the APS-C/DX is close to a standard lens so if you buy the Tokina 12-28 mm you own a wide angle device, with a field of view of almost 100 degrees, and a standard lens as well. Such a combination is interesting and certainly worth your attention.
