3. Build quality

As far as the build quality is concerned the lens is closer to the EF 1.4/50 than to the EF 1.8/50 II. It has a metal bayonet and metal body built into a plastic finish. We also come across a quite readable resolution scale and resolution manual ring, which, in spite of being narrow, is placed in the middle of the lens, not on the edge like in the 1.8/50 II. The ring performance precision is at a medium level. When pressing a bit, the ring moves sideways, which, fortunately, does not result in any resolution scale movement. Just by pressing a bit harder brings the desired effect. Such looseness should not be present.

It is worth mentioning that the EF 2/35 is a very small lens, which can be seen in the picture below. We placed it next to the EF 1.8/50 II and the EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM. It is similar to the EF 1.8/50 II size-wise but it is slightly narrower. The lens’s weight of 210 grams is very little indeed.

As far as the internal structure is concerned, the 1990 construction does not offer anything extraordinary. The lens contains 7 elements set up in 5 groups. None of the lenses is made of low dispersion glass either. Inside the lens we find a 5-blade diaphragm and non-rotating thread for 52 mm diameter filter mounting.

As is customary for Canon, the accessories for the purchased lens are very humble. In the lens kit we get lens covers, a paper box, Styrofoam and a small plastic bag.
