10. Autofocus

On the good old 20D autofocus works noiselessly and really fast. It takes only 0.3-0.4 seconds to go through the whole scale, which is a great result. What’s more, it’s so good that mounting the lens of newer EOS 50D or 7D will not make it any faster.

Let move now to the accuracy of the mechanism. Here were can only say praise, as even the owners of older camera bodies like 20D/30D won’t have anything to complain about. In their case, the accuracy of the focusing mechanism is just as good as it is for 40D/50D. In both cases the number of mistakes recorded in studio conditions was about 2-5%, so small. This lack of vivid difference is not only the effect of a good lens motor, but also quite a large depth of field which is obtained at short focal lengths and mediocre brightness of the lens.

The tested lens didn’t show any tendency of front- or back-focusing both on 20D and 7D it was provided with. On 50D it showed slight back-focus, which is easily corrected via micro-regulation function.
