Sigma 28 mm f/1.8 EX DG Aspherical Macro
11. Summary
- good image quality in the frame centre from f/2.8 aperture,
- low chromatic aberration,
- low distortion,
- quite good work against bright light,
- solid housing,
- minimal focus already from 20 cm,
- rich standard accessory kit,
- 3+2 years of guarantee.
Cons:
- very weak image quality near the maximum relative aperture,
- unacceptable performance at the edge of full frame practically at all aperture values,
- visible coma and high astigmatism,
- huge vignetting on full frame,
- noisy and unreliable autofocus,
- significant weight and dimensions.
The summary must be rather positive in the case. The lens will perform well as a standard lens on a small sensor. The problems is that when you own a reflex camera with such a detector you’d rather think about a Sigma 1.4/30 which is faster and its optical properties - better. Before the latest foreign currency turmoil you had to pay a bit over 1000 PLN for the model tested here; now, with the price significantly higher, its purchase, keeping the presence of a Sigma 1.4/30 in mind, is very disputable indeed.

The fact that it was supposed to be used also on full frame was the Sigma’s 1.8/28 main advantage over the Sigma 1.4/30. Of course you can still attach it to that body but you shouldn’t expect high quality of image at the frame edge. The Sigma tested here simply can’t offer you that…
