In September 2008 Tokina announced the launch of a new AT-X 124 PRO DX II AF 12–24 mm f/4 lens. The II symbol in the name meant that we deal here with a new version of a well-known and thoroughly tested by us AT-X 124 PRO DX AF 12–24 mm f/4 model. In the press release the producer informed us that new anti-reflection and protective multi-coatings were used, which task would be to minimize flares and make the cleaning of outer optical elements easier.

There was not a word about improving the optical construction – the number of elements and groups didn’t change and the physical appearance didn’t change either but the weight of the lens decreased by 30 grams so it might suggest some small modifications when it comes to the type of glass and/or the inner construction of the barrel.

Courtesy of the RTV EURO AGD shop, which lent us the lens for the testing purposes, we were given an opportunity to check how this new version fares on a relatively densely-packed sensor of a Canon 50D.
