Samsung NX 20-50 mm f/3.5-5.6 ED
11. Summary
- small, compact dimensions,
- i-Function technology support,
- good resolution in the frame centre (apart from the 50 mm f/5.6 combination),
- splendid chromatic aberration control,
- low vignetting,
- negligible distortion at longer focal lengths,
- good coma control at the longest focal length.
Cons:
- frame centre resolution at 50 mm, f/5.6 below expectations,
- frame edge resolution could have been higher,
- average work against bright light,
- very high distortion at the shortest focal length,
- average coma control at the shortest focal length,
- plastic mount.
The new Samsung’s device was supposed to be a small companion of the compact mirrorless Samsung NX100 camera, launched with it. The focal lengths ranging from 20 to 50 mm (so the equivalent of the 30-75 mm range) and the standard kit fastness were chosen as a compromise between the smallest dimensions possible and the versatility of the lens. If you decide to buy this instrument ( or most likely the NX100 + NX 20–50 set) you should be aware of its limitations. The lack of the wide angle, typical for a kit, doesn’t make this lens a strictly speaking landscape device and the longest focal length ends where the appropriate portrait focal lengths should start. The lens will be also only an average microphotography tool because it offers x0.22 magnification. However, if you take into account its small dimensions the instrument is worth our attention as a really good NX100 camera’s companion.

The lens didn’t have any spectacular slip-ups – the only thing that we would like to see improved here is a better resolution at the longest focal length and minimum aperture and a lower distortion level at 20 mm. It is a decent lens, of course not flawless but also featuring very low chromatic aberration level which surprised us very pleasantly. As the word “compromise” seems to be the most fitting description of this lens we might end this summary saying that we found it a very good compromise indeed.
