6. Distortion

The distortion of the lens is low but visible to the naked eye. What’s more, its character is complex and it would be difficult to correct by small image manipulations. The measurements showed that in the frame centre from the upper to the lower edge we deal with barrel distortion of –0.49%. On the right and on the left edge, though, the distortion changes its character into pincushion and is on the level of 1.57%.

The flaws, mentioned here, are not especially serious when we take into account the wide angle of view of the tested lens. Moustache distortion is more difficult to correct than the ordinary “barrel” which we would expect in the case of a lens with such a focal length. Fortunately the deformations are so insignificant that, I suppose, only a small percentage of users will take pains to try correcting them.

It’s worth mentioning here that the Sony, compared to its competitors, fares very well in this category. The Micro Four Thirds “pancakes”, despite narrower angles of view, had barrel distortions much more pronounced.
