3. Build quality

Although the tested lens is slightly bigger than the Nikkor 2.8/20, it still seems to be diminutive. Both devices are not huge after all. This effect is due to the fact that the 2.8/24 model is rather short, measuring only 4.6 centimeters. The photo below shows the comparison between the tested instrument and two other Nikkors: the 2.8/20 prime and the 18-135 mm zoom added as a kit lens to the D80 camera.

The filigree dimensions of the Nikkor 2.8/24 don’t influence the build quality which is beyond reproach. The barrel is solid - you can’t find any cheap, low quality plastic in crucial places. Despite small dimensions the manual focus ring is comfortable and precise; the distance scale is quite clear, allowing you the necessary comfort of work.

When it comes to the inner construction, there are 9 elements positioned in 9 groups. The producer doesn’t boast about any special type of glass or special aspherical surfaces. Apart from that, inside you can also find an aperture with 7 diaphragm blades which can be closed down to f/22 and a filter thread, 52 mm in diameter.
