8. Vignetting

When it comes to the vignetting the Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the focal range had the maximum results amounting to 39%, 24% and 20% respectively. Because of the change of the casing in this optical category we can expect certain noticeable changes in results. Let’s have a glance at the thumbnails of an uniformly lit surface.

In the case of 18 mm focal length and by f/3.5 the vignetting is 36% (-1.28 EV). By f/4.0 that value descends to 30% (-1.03 EV) and by f/5.6 it amounts to 18% (-0.56 EV). The brightness loss in the frame corners becomes negligible only by f/8.0, where it is 13%. On further stopping down you can’t notice any significant, measurable drop of this aberration’s level.

At 30 mm and wide open the vignetting reaches 27% (-0.90 EV) and it decreases to 13% (-0.40 EV) by f/5.6 and to 9% (-0.28 EV) by f/8.0.

At the maximum focal length and by f/5.6 we get the result of 23% (-0.75 EV). If you apply f/8.0 you can reduce the vignetting to an imperceptible level of 8% (-0.25 EV)

Compared to the predecessor we can notice a slight decrease of the vignetting level at the shortest focal length and a slight increase for longer focal lengths. The differences are there but they are really slight and once again, can stem from not only the change of the casing but also from measurement errors and differences between particular specimens.
