- excellent image quality in the frame centre,
- good image quality on the edge of the frame (apart from the maximum aperture),
- well-corrected lateral chromatic aberration,
- relatively low distortion,
- decent work against bright light.
Cons:
- lens’s barrel and mount are made of plastics,
- weak image quality on the edge of the frame near the maximum aperture,
- average autofocus,
- noticeable coma,
- the highest vignetting in this class of equipment.
Optically the Sony DT 1.8/35 is very similar to the Nikkor 1.8/35. Both instruments’ results are very much alike – when it comes to the resolution they are splendid or good in the centre and also on the edge of the frame. In other categories sometimes one is better sometimes the other. The Sony corrects distortion and chromatic aberration better, the vignetting and the coma are Nikkor’s strong suits. The level of astigmatism is similar for both devices and the price is roughly the same too. Better build quality (a mount made of metal) and the presence of a fast SWM motor, making the autofocus more silent and accurate but not necessarily quicker, are important advantages of the Nikkor.

The summary of this test, like in the case of the Nikkor, should be positive, taking into account the price of the tested lens and its target market. Every customer who buys a Sony reflex camera with the 18-55 mm kit lens (or even the older 18-70 mm one) and would like to play with a fixed-focal instrument as well in the Sony system is given a choice. You can get interested in the 1.8/35 or the 1.8/50 models and gain a better image quality and, more importantly, a possibility of using a fast aperture which means more creative fun with a shallower depth of field. It is not all because the company also boasts such models as the 2.8/30 Macro SAM and the 2.8/85 SAM on its offer.
