Lens review

Canon EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM

10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with an ultrasonic USM drive so its work is noiseless. The speed depends on the focal length. At 70 mm the whole range is covered in about 0.7 of a second; for a change, at the maximum focal length, that time can increase to a bit over 1 second. The results in this category are quite decent then.

We don’t express any serious reservations concerning the accuracy of the autofocus. In studio conditions it missed in only 1% of all shots which is a splendid result. In this category you can notice a very significant progress, compared to the cheaper Canon EF 70-300 mm IS USM; in that case the work of focusing mechanism left a lot to be desired.

The tested lens didn’t show any front or back focus tendency, no matter whether it was attached to the EOS 1Ds MkIII or to the 50D.
