Samyang 8 mm f/2.8 UMC Fisheye

- small, well-built and very handy casing,
- sensational image quality in the frame centre,
- excellent image quality on the edge of the frame including the maximum relative aperture,
- low chromatic aberration,
- negligible astigmatism,
- decently corrected coma,
- high transmission,
- very good price/quality ratio.
Cons:
- noticeable vignetting,
- no depth of field scale.
The tested lens fares a bit worse than the Samyang 7.5 mm f/3.5 UMC Fish-eye MFT for mirrorless cameras with a Micro 4/3 sensor, so praised by us. The difference is especially noticeable when you compare the results in vignetting and work against bright light. Still you can defend the Samyang 8 mm f/2.8 UMC Fisheye quoting two important factors. First of all it is faster and designed to work on a bigger detector. Such features raise the standards significantly and you have to admit the Samyang still didn’t have any problems with meeting them.
At a quite moderate price you get a nifty device, able to provide really sharp images across the frame starting already from the maximum relative aperture – it would be foolish to demand more. Mirrorless NX and NEX system cameras have now another very interesting and completely recommendable lens. Every user of a camera of that type, interested in a “fisheye” device, should seriously consider buying the Samyang 2.8/8. I suppose the launch of this lens models with Canon M and Fujifilm XF mounts is only a matter of time.
