Lens review

Samsung NX 20 mm f/2.8

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

‘Pancake‘ lenses usually don’t correct the coma well and the Samsung 2.8/20 is not an exception to that rule. Looking at the image of a diode positioned in the corner of the frame you see that the coma is high and it doesn’t disappear on stopping down by 1 EV. That aberration contributes greatly to the deterioration of images on the edge of the frame.

The situation of astigmatism is quite different as it is corrected in an almost perfect way. An average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values was just 1% which we consider to be a perfect value.

Defocused circles of light produced by the Samsung 2.8/20 look very sensible indeed. It is an interesting fact that already by f/4.0 the image in the frame corner doesn’t differs much from that in the centre. Bokeh of that lens might be very pleasing to the eye.
