1. Introduction

Canon hasn’t been exactly spoiling their fans when it comes to the lenses designed for its reflex cameras with smaller sensors. Among EF-S devices you can find many versions of 18-55 mm lenses, 18-135 mm or 55-250 mm instruments as well, but there are few truly interesting models such as the EF-S 11–18 mm or the EF-S 15–85 mm. There are not many fixed focal length lenses either but the word ‘few’ should be treated as an euphemism in this case. Not long ago there was in fact only one ‘prime’ designed for the EF-S system available; it was a very well-done EF-S 60 mm f/2.8 Macro USM model, launched in 2005.

However in September 2014 Canon proved that they wouldn’t forget about fixed focus lenses; they launched the Canon EF-S 24 mm f/2.8 STM. Of course one swallow doesn’t make a summer but still we are very glad of that move.
