Canon EF 11-24 mm f/4L USM

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The Canon EF 11–24 mm f/4L USM corrects the coma well. In the corners of the APS-C sensor we didn’t observe any problems. A slight deformation of the image of the diode could be seen in the corners of full frame but only at the shorter focal lengths; still it was a level which shouldn’t really bother you.

When it comes to the astigmatism understood as an average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values it amounted to 4.8%. Results below 5% we consider as low so it means the Canon 11-24 mm deals pretty well with the correction of that off-axis aberration. Still in order to asses that lens properly in this category you have to divide that result between particular focal lengths. We have no reservations whatsoever to the 24 mm focal length with the astigmatism reaching a negligible level of 1.8%. In the middle of the range it increases to 7.3% and the biggest problems it causes at the widest angle, reaching an already noticeable value of 9.5%.

Defocused images provided by the Canon 11-24 mm don’t impress us at all. The circles have lighter edges, there is a distinct light gradient and they are deformed in the frame corners as well. Still it’s worth noticing that a nice, creamy, blurred area is not a feature you should expect from a lens with an angle of view of over 120 degrees.
