10. Focusing

The Zeiss Milvus 1.4/50 is a completely manual device. Fortunately the producer took proper care of the manual focus ring which has a wide working range and, overall, is a joy to use. Additionally you get a depth of field scale stretching from f/16 to f/2.8.

A combination of the 50 mm focal length and f/1.4 aperture makes the depth of field quite shallow and you have to have some experience with manual lenses to manage the focusing without any problems. A proper focusing screen on the viewfinder would be very welcome or activating the focus peaking function, of course if it is available in your camera menu.

In the catalogue dedicated to the tested lens you can find the following depth of field chart computer for a circle of confusion as big as 0.033 mm.
