8. Vignetting

First let’s check the vignetting performance for the smaller APS-C sensor – appropriate thumbnails are shown below.

Significant dimensions of the lens mean it can fare very well here. The vignetting is noticeable only at the maximum relative aperture reaching just 19% (−0.61 EV). By f/2.0 and f/2.8 it disappears practically completely, amounting to 6% (−0.18 EV) and 5% (−0.15 EV) respectively.

After passing to the bigger full frame sensor there are more problems and photos below show them pretty clearly.

At the maximum relative aperture the brightness loss in the frame corners amounts to 50% (−1.97 EV) – a very similar result to that of the manual Samyang 1.4/50 designed for reflex cameras, a bit weaker than the result of the Sigma A 1.4/50 but also noticeably better than the result of the Milvus 1.4/50. On stopping down the aperture to f/2.0 the vignetting decreases to 30% (−1.03 EV) and after employing the f/2.8 aperture it drops further to 20% (−0.63 EV). The problems end almost completely by f/4.0 and f/5.6 apertures where we got respectively 12% (−0.37 EV) and 11% (−0.35 EV).

Below we present averaged out values of brightness loss shown in concentric circles as you move further away from the frame centre. The numerical value expressed in percents for every image shows the area limited from the top and right by 100% and from the bottom by the presented curve. The area shows how much light overall is lost due to the vignetting effect. Please don’t mix these percentages with the values given at the beginning of the chapter because they aren’t directly connected.
