1. Introduction

Usually only professional, expensive telephoto lenses feature really big entrance pupils. In their case an active diameter might amount to 10 cm - I think here about such devices as a 2/200, a 2.8/300 or a 4/400. The 10 cm level is not the upper limit, mind you – in a 4/600 model the entrance pupil might be as big as 15 cm.

In the case of classic portrait lenses such huge elements are unheard of. The most classic parameters, like 1.2/85, 1.4/85 or 2/135 offer you entrance pupils as big as 60–70 mm. The Sony company with the cooperation of Zeiss went one step further, offering the Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 135 mm f/1.8 and not so long ago the Chinese Mitakon outbid that by presenting a limited series of the 1.4/135 lens.

Also Nikon decided to mark their presence in that segment. In July 2016 they announced the launch of the Nikkor AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED, with an entrance pupil as big as 75 mm so exactly the same size as in the 1.8/135.
