10. Autofocus

The Nikkor AF-S 28 mm f/1.4E ED is equipped with an SWM ultrasonic autofocus motor. It guarantees silent work but not superior speed. With the lens attached to the Nikon D3x running through the whole distance range and confirming the focus takes about 1 second and that time doesn’t depend on the direction of movement. In the case of the Nikon D7000 the autofocus is equally slow. These results can be called only weak. Journalistic parameters of this lens set really high standards so, in our opinion, the Nikkor’s autofocus should have been noticeably faster.

We didn’t have any problems with the accuracy of the mechanism. The autofocus sometimes corrected its settings after a while but it happened only from time to time. Overall we assess its performance very positively in this area.

When it comes to front and back focus tendencies we noticed a slight back-focus with the lens attached to both of testing bodies. It was more pronounced in the case of the D7000 than in the case of the D3x. Still, in both cases , it was correctible by microregulation on a level of several units.
