Pros:

  • excellent image quality in the frame centre,
  • good image quality on the edge of APS-C,
  • sensible image quality on the edge of full frame,
  • very low lateral chromatic aberration,
  • lack of problems with spherical aberration,
  • moderate astigmatism,
  • slight vignetting on APS-C,
  • silent and accurate autofocus,
  • very good price/quality ratio.

Cons:

  • worse distortion correction than in the case of rivals,
  • weak performance against bright light,
  • huge vignetting on full frame.
The Samyang AF 35 mm f/1.4 FE is currently the cheapest 1.4/35 full frame lens available on the market. Combine that with its very good image quality, offered practically up from the maximum relative aperture, and you get an excellent reason for recommending the purchase. If you compare the Samyang’s price tag with amounts of money you have to pay for original Sony and Zeiss FE mount lenses your enthusiasm for buying it might even increase. It’s enough to say that the Samyang AF 1.4/35 FE is distinctively cheaper and optically better than the Sonnar T* FE 35 mm f/2.8 ZA, a device by two EV stops slower.
