Sigma A 40 mm f/1.4 DG HSM
9. Ghosting and flares
The task of the Sigma wasn’t easy in this category, with its big, front element, not sheltered by anything. What’s more, its optical construction consists of 12 groups of elements; it means as many as 24 air-to-glass surfaces. Even if the best anti reflection coatings were employed, the losses for light falling straight on might reach 7-8%. Losses for light falling at an angle might get to more than a dozen percent and ghosting, flares, and contrast loss are the result.
