6. Distortion

An angle of view of 114 degrees is always a challenge when it comes to distortion correction. Several 14 mm lenses we've tested so far dealt with that aberration in different way. The Sigma A 1.8/14 fared the best, as it showed a negligible level of -0.24% on the smaller APS-C sensor and a bit higher value, that of -2.38%, on full frame.

The Samyang AF 14 mm f/2.8 FE performed weakly in this category for a change, not only having the worst results but also trying to improve the situation with introduction of moustache distortion.

In this category the Sony FE 14 mm f/1.8 GM is much closer to the good performance of the Sigma than to the weak one of the Samyang. On the smaller APS-C sensor there is slight barrel distortion amounting to -0.82%, and it increases to -2.25% after passing to full frame. Within the margin of error, such a result is virtually the same as that of the Sigma.

To sum up we are very happy that Sony decided to correct distortion with the help of optics and they managed to do so in a successful way up to a point. What's more, we didn't notice any trace of moustache distortion, and that's another asset.
