7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The coma correction of the Sony FE 70-200 mm f/2.8 GM OSS II is really splendid. No matter what focal length you employ and no matter where you place the diode in the frame, the result remains practically the same. In this category the tested lens once again fared exceedingly well.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between vertical and horiztontal MTF50 function values, amounted to 4.9% so is very low. What's more, we didn't notice any substantial differences between particular focal lengths. In this category the Sony fares distinctly better than the Nikkor as its astigmatism value exceeded 16%.

Defocused circles of light look very nice, especially for a zoom lens. There are just slight traces of onion-ring bokeh (after all there are aspherical elements inside the optical system) and you almost can't spot any brighter rim on the edge. Mechanical vignetting is a problem though – being very distinct by f/2.8, quite noticeable by f/4.0 and still accented by f/5.6 – but the same effect we observed in case of the heavier and bigger Nikkor.
