7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

When it comes to coma, fast, wide angle lenses are always very difficult to correct. Taking into account the fact that the bar was raised very high here the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9 mm f/1.7 ASPH dealt with the problem sensibly well. Images of a diode in the frame corners are distorted but it's not a very pronounced effect, consisting mainly on slight elongation of their shapes. A pity, though, that stopping down the aperture by 1 EV produces very little improvement here.

More objections you can have with astigmatism correction. An average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values amounted to 16.7% and we consider it something on the borderline between medium and high levels.

Out-of-focus images, produced by the tested lens, were nice, especially if you take into account its angle of view and the fact that the construction features aspherical elements. Defocused circles are quite smooth, without any brighter patches, and onion-ring bokeh is barely accented. The only thing that sticks out is a brighter rim and mechanical vignetting, visible up to f/2.2.
