Voigtlander Nokton 35 mm f/0.9 Aspherical

1. Introduction

I've always emphasized that simple truth: if you are able to produce lenses as fast as f/1.0, or even faster, for full frame systems, there are no objections whatsoever why you shouldn't produce them for systems with smaller detectors.

You can state it even stronger: it seems that among lenses with angles of view ranging from about 35 to 75 degrees, there should be really a lot of faster devices designed for smaller sensors and every respectable manufacturer should feature such models in their line-up.

Voigtlander is undoubtedly one of such producers and its series of lenses, called Nokton, has been featuring models which apertures range from f/0.95 to f/1.2 and they are designed for almost all systems available on the market. The line of Noktons for the Micro 4/3 system is especially well-put-together. It consists of as many as four models. Because of their excellent optical properties one of such lenses is used in our editorial office on a regular basis as we test sensor resolution with it. As if it wasn't enough, in 2020 that line was enlarged by the Super Nokton 29 mm with a very impressive aperture fastness, that of f/0.8.

In case of APS-C sensors the situation is not that rosy; anyway Noktons offered by Voigtlander usually were as fast as f/1.2 but not faster. The situation changed in February 2023 when the Voigtlander Nokton 35 mm f/0.9 Aspherical was launched. It was such a juicy morsel of opticts that we simply had to order it for our tests.
