1. Introduction

When it comes to launching interesting novelties with original parameters Sigma has always been a very adventurous player. After all they showed such a novel construction as the first Bigma 50-500 mm model, currently superseded by the 60-600 mm variant.

In the segment of very fast zoom lenses Sigma hasn't been idle either. They presented the monstrous Sigma 200-500 mm f/2.8 EX DG and in 2013 they launched the Sigma A 18-35 mm f/1.8 DC HSM designed for reflex cameras with the APS-C/DX sensors. Three years later they added an equally fast Sigma A 50-100 mm f/1.8 DC HSM to that bunch.

Meanwhile, in June 2015, the full frame Sigma A 24-35 mm f/2.0 DG HSM was shown. It was like three fast classic primes in one barrel. To be honest, after passing to mirrorless systems that lens exactly seemed to be one of the first that could be presented in a version with new mounts. I thought Sigma could go further and increase the focal range to 24-50 mm. Of course it would affect the weight and dimensions but, perhaps it was the price worth paying.

Still Sigma decided to adopt a different approach. A faster aperture became the main priority and limitations concerning weight and dimensions forced them to change the focal range. As a result in June 2024 they launched the Sigma A 28-45 mm f/1.8 DG DN that, to some extend, you can also consider as three classic primes in one barrel. You get here, after all, the wide angle 1.8/28, the journalistic 1.8/35 and the almost standard 1.8/45 lens.

We managed to get hold of one specimen of that instrument courtesy of K-Consult, the Sigma distributor for the Polish market.
