Last months have seen the launch of two interesting Sigma zoom lenses. First, in June 2024, we saw the Sigma A 28-45 mm f/1.8 DG DN which we also have managed to test. Then, at the beginning of this year's September the Sigma A 28-105 mm f/2.8 DG DN was presented as well.
The lenses of 28-105 mm or even 24-105 mm class are hardly a novelty, there are a lot of them on the market. Still, they are most often as fast as f/4.0 or changing aperture speed from f/3.5 to f/5.6 and because of that they become not only very universal instruments, often sold as a part of a kit set with a full frame camera body.
Canon decided to make a very bold move in this category, presenting in November 2023 the RF 24-105 mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z. We get here really impressing parameters but you have to pay for them with a length of almost 20 centimeters and a weight of 1330 grams. As a result it is perhaps the first standard zoom lens offered with a special tripod adapter.

Sigma decided to limit the wide angle of view and start the range from 28 mm. It allowed them to decrease physical dimensions to less than 16 cm and the weight – to 995 grams. It's still a lot but, at the same time, it makes this lens far handier. Of course with such interesting constructions it is crucial how they perform optically and where compromises are located. We hope that the following chapters will allow to answer that question.
