1. Introduction

You can say without any exaggeration that Venus Optics is a specialist when it comes to macro lenses. Currently their line-up features as many as fifteen instruments of different types and focal lengths that have the word 'Macro' in their name.

I admit we have neglected that segment in our tests – so far out of the whole array of lenses we managed to look closer only at the Laowa 100 mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO, originally designed for a cooperation with full frame reflex cameras but currently also offered with mirrorless mounts. It's worth adding the lens finished our testing procedure with flying colours.

Venus Optics LAOWA FFII 90 mm f/2.8 CA-Dreamer Macro 2X - Introduction

Later on Laowa launched successively macro models dedicated to mirrorless cameras and, what's important, every one of them featured an excellent 2:1 reproduction ratio - the following chart sums up all these launches. As you can notice, Laowa took proper care of all mount versions because you can find a 50 mm model dedicated for the Micro 4/3 system, a 65 mm variant dedicated for APS-C/DX sensors, and also full frame 58, 85, and 90 mm instruments.

Venus Optics LAOWA FFII 90 mm f/2.8 CA-Dreamer Macro 2X - Introduction

As we managed to test macro 2.8/90 macro lenses produced by such companies as Sony and Tamron we decided to check how the Laowa FFII 90 mm f/2.8 CA-Dreamer Macro 2X compares. Courtesy of fdirect, a distributor of the Venus Optics brand name instruments for Poland, we borrowed one specimen of this lens for testing purposes and could take a closer look – our findings we present in the following chapters.

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
