4. Summary

The new Sigma C 16-28 mm f/2.8 DG DN has a lot of assets. It is a lens relatively lightweight and shapely, it doesn't change its dimensions during either zooming or focusing. What's more, it offers you a classic, non-rotating filter thread, 72 mm in diameter.

Our sample shots don't show any serious sharpness issues – quite the opposite in fact. The lens seems to perform very evenly, without any slip-ups. It also corrects longitudinal chromatic aberration without problems and it performs satisfactorily well against bright light. Also its autofocus unit we find very efficient – even though we dealt with just a pre-production model.

Weak points can be found as well – exactly in categories we expected them to be – but, after all, Sigma has never claimed C series is free of compromises. The flaws are especially pronounced when it comes to distortion and vignetting, two aberrations that are easy to correct with the help of software. Still, we think the producers went a bit over the top. If distortion is so high they could have let is stay that way, without introducing moustache deformations, more difficult to correct and not so nice to look at. 4 EV of vignetting is really something huge and it can make itself felt.

All these flaws don't change the fact that the lens performs in a very predictable way – you can certainly find shortcomings but they are in categories indicated by the producer as possibly problematic. If you want to have lenses with lower distortion and vignetting you should get interested in the Art line. The lenses will perform better but they might also be bigger, weigh more, and have a higher price tag.
