• very high build quality,
• splendid image quality in the frame centre,
• very good image quality on the edge of the frame,
• low chromatic aberration,
• slight distortion,
• well-corrected coma,
• very low astigmatism,
• negligible vignetting in the 70-130 mm range,
• excellent autofocus work,
• quite efficient stabilization (but you would want 4 EV in this class),
• rich selection of accessories included in box (tripod adapter, petal-type lens hood and a case).

Cons:

• the image quality at the maximum relative aperture in the middle of the focal lengths range should have been better,
• weak performance against bright light,
• a bit too high vignetting at 200 mm focal length,
• not very good performance with the converter attached.

Although the Nikkor 70-200 VR is a very well-made lens and you really can’t be displeased with it, we still feel a bit unsatisfied. If you buy a professional lens for as much as 1700 $ you should expect perfect results in all categories. A bit better achievements for the combination of 130 mm focal length and f/2.8, a slightly lower vignetting at 200 mm and we would deal here with a perfect instrument. You can handle weak work against bright light using the lens hood, included in the product bundle so we can turn a blind eye to this one.

These flaws don’t lower a very good overall mark of this lens. If you have a Nikon reflex camera and if you don’t want any compromise you simply have no choice – currently this is the best 70-200 mm class device in this system.
