10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with an ultrasonic USM motor so its work is noiseless. The mechanism is quite fast as well because running through the whole scale takes 0.8-0.9 of a second. If you are not satisfied with such a speed you can always use a focus limiter – choosing the option from 3.5 meters to infinity you can enjoy the fastness of about 0.4 of a second.

The accuracy of the focusing mechanism deserves only superlatives. It was perfect on the EOS 50D and also on the full frame 1 Ds MkIII. In the studio conditions the lens practically never missed, reaching the efficiency on the level of 98%.

We didn’t observe any front or back focus problems. The photo below, taken using the 1Ds MkIII, shows that the sharpness is a bit before the right position but you must remember that it was taken at the most difficult combination, near the minimum focusing distance. Even there the chart fitted in the depth of field so we shouldn’t expect any problems for bigger working distances. In the case of the 50D there were no problems anywhere. The focus was always set where in the proper place.
