10. Autofocus

Nowadays every producer tries to have ultrasonic autofocus mechanisms on their offer. Samsung decided not to lag behind the competitors and the 2.8/60 model is actually the first which features such a mechanism. However every new producer entering that path, has it more difficult when it comes to the nomenclature. After all how many abbreviations and names can you come up with to describe an ultrasonic autofocus mechanism? Samsung decided to call it SSA – for Super Sonic Actuator.

That „Actuator” works noiselessly indeed; unfortunately it is quite slow. Running through the whole distance scale takes it about two seconds. After using the limiter the speed increases significantly and the focus is set in less than 0.7 of a second – it is already a very good result.

What’s interesting, joined with the Samsung NX10 the tested lens didn’t work perfectly well – in studio conditions we had 7% of misses. It is not perhaps a serious reason to complain but dealing with a brand name device with a high quality ultrasonic mechanism attached to a body which sets the focus using the contrast detection method you should expect a perfect performance.

Fortunately we didn’t see any front or back focus tendency.
