11. Summary

Pros:
  • excellent image quality in the frame centre,
  • good image quality on the edge of the frame,
  • slight chromatic aberration – both lateral and longitudinal,
  • good correction of spherical aberration,
  • negligible astigmatism,
  • advantageous price/quality and price/ability ratios.

Cons:

  • weak performance against bright light,
  • distinct vignetting at the maximum relative aperture.

The Samyang 16 mm f/2.0 ED AS UMC CS is a really well-made construction. For a very sensible price of 1500 PLN you get a lens with interesting parameters, able to provide a sharp image across the frame, correcting most of optical aberrations in a proper way. Even the flaws we included in our ‘cons’ list aren’t huge reasons to complain. It’s true, the vignetting at the maximum relative aperture is high but also more expensive full frame 24 mm constructions don’t perform better. The flares are distinct, it is a problem often experienced with Samyangs. Fortunately the producer includes a petal-type lens hood in the accessory kit – if you use it there will be less issues.
