8. Vignetting

First let’s check how the tested Mitakon 2/35 fared on a small sensor of the Nikon D7000 – the appropriate thumbnails are presented below.

While cooperating with smaller sensors the vignetting shouldn’t be a problem. Even at the maximum relative aperture it is just moderate, reaching 23% (−0.77 EV). On stopping down to f/2.8 you see the problem disappear completely as the aberration level decreases to just 9% (−0.29 EV).

Now let’s check the situation on full frame.

There are much more problems: in the frame corners at the maximum relative aperture you lose as much as 50% of light (-2.00 EV). It is a lot but you should still keep in mind the fact that the vignetting level of the bigger and more expensive Canon 2/35 IS was 3 EV. The Nikkor 1.8/35G fared the best of all three as its vignetting amounted to 46% and by f/2.0 it decreased to 40%. Returning to the Mitakon: by f/2.8 its vignetting drops to 35% (−1.23 EV) and by f/4.0 it decreases further to 18% (−0.59 EV). The problem disappears almost completely by f/5.6 and f/8.0 with the vignetting reaching about 12% (-0.37 EV).

Although the Mitakon hardly distinguished itself you should once again emphasize the fact that it wasn’t also the worst lens in this category as the Canon’s 2/35 IS performance was even worse.
