9. Ghosting, flares and transmission

Let’s start with a transmission graph of the tested lens, presented below.

Mitakon Speedmaster 35 mm f/0.95 - Ghosting, flares and transmission

What’s interesting it is a completely different thing than the graph of the Mitakon Creator 2/35. It might remind you of old photographic lenses with a single layer magnesium fluoride coatings . There is a transmission peak for yellow light – the amount of gathered photons in that place is by more than a dozen percent higher than for red and blue light. As a result the images produced by the Mitakon will have a yellowish cast tendency.

The tested lens consists of 7 groups of elements so it has 14 air-to-glass surfaces to cover. With a maximum transmission level amounting to 85-86% it means on one surface it loses at least 1.1% of light. It is a very average result, not much better than that of good old magnesium fluoride coatings which were used even several decades ago.

Not an especially impressive transmission level and lack of good blackening inside (we mentioned it in the chapter describing the build quality of the lens and its design) made themselves felt acutely when it comes to performance against bright light. The situation is not so bad near the maximum relative aperture but on stopping down it becomes simply tragic. Flares can take different shapes, have different colours and they are sometimes more and sometimes less intensive; what’s more, you can catch them even if the sun is positioned far from the frame…
