Let’s glance at thumbnails below and check the vignetting performance on the sensor of the Nikon D500.

At the most demanding combination of 10 mm and f/4.5 aperture you have to take into account a loss of 44% (-1.67 EV) of light in the frame corners. It is a high value; for example the Nikkor 10-24 mm at its maximum aperture which is f/3.5 had a result of 39%. On the other hand the Nikkor 10-20 mm fares a bit better than the Canon 10-18 mm which lost as much as 53% of light on its slightly smaller sensor.

Stopping down the aperture to a value of f/5.6 makes the vignetting decrease to 29% (-0.98 EV). By f/8.0 we got 19% (-0.63 EV) of light fall-off, and by f/11 it was 16% (-0.49 EV). Further stopping down didn’t have any measureable effect on the aberration, described here.

In the middle of the focal range and by f/5.0 aperture the vignetting is 35% (-1.24 EV). A slight stopping down to f/5.6 is able to decrease its level to 30% (-1.04 EV). By apertures f/8.0 and f/11.0 we got respectively: 14% (-0.43 EV) and 12% (-0.38 EV).

The vignetting problems at the 20 mm focal length are least numerous. In that case by f/5.6 the vignetting is 30% (-1.02 EV), and by f/8.0 it decreases to a value of 12% (-0.38 EV). By f/11.0 that aberration becomes practically imperceptible as it drops to 10% (-0.32 EV).
