Sigma A 50 mm f/1.4 DG DN

1. Introduction

When in 2013 Sigma started to launch their fast full frame Art line lenses they had it planned thoroughly and started by offering the most classic parameters. First we saw the A 35 mm f/1.4 DG HSM, the next year the A 50 mm f/1.4 DG HSM was shown, and one year later the A 24 mm f/1.4 DG HSM. You could expect something like a 1.4/85 as the next one but the unique 1.4/20 was released instead; only then we saw the classic 85 mm device.

In the span of three years the Sigma system gained five f/1.4 Art instruments that cover the focal length range from 20 to 85 mm. The following chart shows a summary of basic properties of these lenses. It's also worth mentioning the fact that soon afterwards we saw 14 and 135 mm models but as fast as f/1.8. The following years brought the launches of f/1.4 primes with focal lengths of 105, 28, and 40 mm.

Sigma A 50 mm f/1.4 DG DN - Introduction

The system of fast Art lenses, designed for full frame mirrorless cameras, started in a quite different way. First, in July 2019, they showed the A 35 mm f/1.2 DG DN, one year later the A 85 mm f/1.4 DG DN, and then again the 35 mm device but as fast as f/1.4. The next launch in this segment happened only one year later but Sigma showed two lenses at once, the 1.4/20 and the 1.4/24. Still it was strange that Sigma made us wait so long for the most classic of standard lenses, the 1.4/50 model – it was announced in February 2023 and finally we managed to get it.
